Anagni is an Italian municipality of 21 380 inhabitants in the province of Frosinone in Lazio.
It is known as the city of the Popes, for having given birth to four popes (Innocent III, Alexander IV, Gregory IX and Boniface VIII) and for being a long residence and papal seat. In particular, the name of Anagni is linked to the events of Pope Boniface VIII and to the episode known as the "slap of Anagni".
In the medieval center are the Cathedral with the adjoining Museum (MuCA), which also includes the Crypt, called the "Sistine Chapel of the Middle Ages", entirely decorated with frescoes dating back to the first half of the thirteenth century, the medieval palace called "Bonifacio" VIII ", formerly of Gregory IX and residence of Pietro II Caetani, nephew of Bonifacio VIII, Palazzo Trajetto, formerly Caetani, residence of Bonifacio VIII, the municipal palace of 1159-61, the Barnekow house and the numerous churches, including the medieval church of San Pietro in Vineis.
Today Anagni has established itself as a commercial center and is, with over 500 companies, the largest industrial center in southern Lazio and one of the most important in central Italy.

What to visit in the surroundings

In addition to the historic center of Anagni you can visit some places of great interest such as Fumone with its famous castle built between the ninth and tenth centuries and then used as a prison of the Church and the well-known Pope Celestino V. In In reality, the castle was the theater of sinister and tragic events and, according to some legends, the strasks would be "visible" even today due to the presence of ghosts inside the castle, just like Celestino V and other peronages that were imprisoned in the dungeons of the castle. Very interesting to visit and the Lake Canterno also called "The Ghost Lake" because of a cantilever, in the middle of the body of water, which in former times made the water of the lake flow out making it temporarily disappear. It is located in the municipalities of Trevignano, Fiuggi, Fumone and Ferentino and is now also a nature reserve. Finally Fiuggi, one of the most important tourist destinations of Lazio is only 20 km from Anagni and its sister center and the ancient baths make it one of the most renowned and evocative places in the region.
