Valmontone
Valmontone is an important center a few kilometers from Rome.
Its proximity to the capital and its excellent road and rail links have made it one of the most important cities in the southern part of the Roman province.

It stands on a tuff hill, 330 meters above sea level. The landscape surrounding the town is predominantly hilly and lush, thanks to the nearby Sacco River and numerous water springs.
The origins of Valmontone border on legend.
It seems to have been founded by Glaucus, son of Minos, and called Labicum from the name of the battle shield.
The name VALMONTONE appears for the first time in a document from 1139, and means "valley overlooked by a mountain", due to the fact that the town was built on a mountain overlooking a valley.
In 1208 Innocent III, of the Conti family, purchased the land of Valmontone and entrusted it to his brother Riccardo, Count of Sora.
During this flourishing period, Valmontone was a sought-after destination by important figures such as Charles VIII, King of France, and Urban VI.
In the first half of the 16th century, due to bad alliances and relationships, Valmontone was sacked by the armies of Pope Paul IV and the troops of Marcantonio Colonna.
In 1634 Valmontone was purchased by the Barberini family and, in 1651, by Prince Camillo Pamphilj, nephew of the then Pope Innocent X.
In those years Valmontone experienced its maximum artistic and monumental splendor.
In 1843, Pope Gregory XVI, returning from a visit to Anagni, stopped in Valmontone and visited the Doria Pamphili Palace and the Collegiate Church. The same year saw the Papal Bull elevating Valmontone to the rank of "City."
Between October 1944 and May 1945 the city was bombed and shelled several times by Allied forces, causing the almost total destruction of the town and the death of numerous civilians.
On May 9, 1960, she was awarded the Silver Medal for Civil Merit with the following citation: “She endured, with fearless pride, numerous aerial bombardments that destroyed most of her buildings and caused the death of 157 of her best sons, never bowing before the armed invader, nor doubting the best destiny of the Fatherland.”
Although the exact number of victims of the bombings is controversial, the historical and human evidence of the profound wounds suffered by the city of Valmontone during the last war remains.

Doria Pamphili Palace
Among the places to visit in Valmontone, the Palazzo Doria Pamphilj, a baronial palace on the ancient fiefdom of Valmontone, is definitely worth mentioning. The palace's history begins in 1651, when Prince Camillo Pamphilj, nephew of Pope Innocent X and member of one of Rome's most powerful families, purchased the Valmontone area from Francesco Barberini and made it his suburban residence.

The prince wanted to create a sort of ideal city within the fiefdom, the Città Pamphilia, which would include not only the palace but also a church, warehouses, stables, residences, and shops. The Palace was built on the site of the ancient Sforza castle, formerly owned by the Counts of Valmontone. In 1652, the castle was almost completely demolished, and work began in 1654, concluding around 1670. Construction was under the direction of Jesuit Father Benedetto Molli, and then passed to the supervision of Antonio Del Grande in 1666. In the 18th century, the Pamphili family was in danger of extinction, so, through an arranged marriage, the family merged with the Doria-Landi family, becoming Doria-Landi-Pamphili. Hence the Palazzo's composite name. Its massive, square shape and location at the highest point of the village suggest the watchtower role inherited from the ancient medieval castle. The palace's interior is divided into 365 rooms, the most important of which are located on the Piano Nobile, where you can still admire some important frescoes, painted between 1657 and 1661 by artists such as Pier Francesco Mola, Gaspard Dughet, Guillaume Courtois known as Borgognone, Francesco Cozza, and Mattia Preti. The palace also houses the museum of the same name, which presents the various archaeological sites in the Valmontone area with descriptions and artifacts.

The Museum's three-story halls display the most important artifacts from ancient Praeneste and its surrounding area, arranged by major themes that encompass the main aspects of the history, culture, and artistic production of one of the most important and flourishing cities of ancient Lazio. The first-floor halls house works related to the cult of Fortuna Fortuna, Roman copies of Greek masterpieces, honorary statues, portraits, and reliefs from the Republican and Imperial eras. One of the famous Grimani reliefs, a remarkable artistic expression of pacification and rebirth, dates back to the Augustan era, perhaps the work of the same sculptors who decorated the Ara Pacis in Rome. The second floor displays materials discovered in the necropolises, depicting rare versions of ancient Greek and Italic myths, and numerous votive and architectural terracottas from the city's sanctuaries. On the third floor, a single room houses the magnificent polychrome mosaic of the Nile, a perspective view of the Egyptian landscape during the flooding of the Nile, created by Alexandrian artists at the end of the 2nd century BC. It is one of the largest and most important surviving Hellenistic mosaics, an absolute masterpiece in its composition, chromatic palette, and richness of detail. In the archaeological area in front of the Museum, you can visit the impressive remains of the Sanctuary of Fortuna Primigenia, structured as a series of artificial terraces connected by ramps and stairways. It represents the finest example of Hellenistic architecture in Italy, inspired by the spectacular monumental complexes of the eastern Aegean, so much so that it was chosen as an "Italian Wonder" to represent the Lazio region as part of a project promoted by the National Youth Forum on the occasion of the 150th anniversary of Italian Unification.

Another stop on this tour of the Castelli Romani Park is Castel Gandolfo, overlooking Lake Albano and a holiday destination for popes, cardinals, and prelates of the Roman Curia who stayed in the ancient Savelli residence, transformed into a Papal Palace in 1623 by Urban VII.
Inside the latter is the very important astronomical observatory, known as the "Vatican Observatory".
The town boasts numerous valuable monuments: from the church of San Tommaso da Villanova, designed by Gian Lorenzo Bernini, to the 16th-century Porta Romana; from the majestic Villa Clodio, built in the Republican era, to the Baths of Diana, commissioned by Emperor Domitian.
Of particular interest and beauty are the remains of the ancient villas of Castel Gandolfo, such as the Albanum Domitiani, Domitian's imposing country residence; Villa Barberini and Villa Cybo, connected by an overpass and then a loggia leading back to the papal palace.
The town is part of the circuit of the most beautiful villages in Italy.
Castel Gandolfo is best known for the popes' summer residence, which is surrounded by many other summer residences, villas, and cottages built starting in the 17th century.
Its territory includes almost the entire coastal arc of Lake Albano, which is home to the CONI Olympic rowing stadium.
There are also various places of archaeological interest (including the emissary of Lake Albano and the remains of Domitian's Alban villa), naturalistic (the area being included in the perimeter of the Castelli Romani regional park) and artistic (such as the papal collegiate church of San Tommaso da Villanova built by Gian Lorenzo Bernin.
